Frequently Asked Questions
THE CARE & FEEDING OF YOUR STEEL DOG
1. Will my steel dog rust?
Steel Dogs are made of raw steel and are guaranteed to rust unless sealed.
2. How do I seal my steel dog so it will never rust?
The most effective, longest lasting AND most expensive way to prevent your
steel dog from rusting is to have it powder-coated at a metalwork shop.
Less expensive and less permanent methods are described below:
2a. How do I seal my steel dog for inside use?
Indoors: If you keep your piece indoors you will still need to seal the piece to
prevent finger prints, dog nose marks, etc. Use a clear acrylic spray in a
FLAT MATTE finish.
2b. How do I seal my steel dog for outside use?
Outdoors: I recommend a lubricant seal, such as WD40 or similar product. It is
high maintenance outdoors to keep it from rusting...you have to spray and
re-spray according to your weather conditions.
3. What if I want the steel dog to look rusty?
If you want the piece to rust quicker, spritz (light misting) with water, let dry and
repeat until it reaches the stage you like. If not sealed, pieces will drip rust if
left out in a moist environment.
